2 week portugal / spain itinerary

Hello,

This is our first trip to Portugal / Spain.

We are flying into Lisbon and staying for 3 nights.

Then for the next 6-7 days, we were thinking of going down to Lagos and then explore the southern Spain regions.

Fly to Barcalona and spend 3 days there and then fly back home.

We do not have booked any places to stay or see yet.

Here are some questions I was wondering about?

1) Since we have about 6-7 days for southern Spain, what areas would be the best to visit. I'm not sure how much would be cramming it and vice versa.

2) What would the best mode of transportation be? Is it feasible for us to take a train/bus from Lisbon and throughout southern Spain? Then we'd fly to Barcalona and then home.

3) Using a rental car? Or would that be pretty chaotic since it's our first time?

I think this is a good start.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks.

- Brad

Portugal and Spain Trip
by: Adam

Hi Brad,
Your trip sounds amazing and I have done similar trips. Some things that I would suggest is to take the train from Lisbon to Faro and from Faro you'll have to either take a bus, taxi, or rent a car to Lagos. From Lagos to Seville there are no trains so you'll have to take a bus which is cheap but takes four or 5 hours or rent a car and drive to Seville.
Seville deserves at least two days, maybe more since you can day trip out of Seville. Check out my page on seville http://www.southern-spain-travel.com/seville-spain.html . A couple examples of days trips from Seville would be a day in Cadiz, just a short train ride from the Santa Justa train station. A beach day at Matalascana, a short bus ride from Seville. A short bus ride to the Roman Ruins of Italica.
As for the rest of your trip...if you wanted to avoid renting a car I would take the high speed to Madrid. You can spend a few days touring Madrid not to mention easily take day trips out of Madrid to Segovia, Toledo, and other areas.
Unless you had to fly out of Barcelona I would not spend the extra money and time traveling there. Not that Barcelona isn't worth it but I think you would be trying to cover too much ground in a two week vacation.
Hopefully this was helpful...Have a great trip!
