Skiing in Southern Spain

Skiing may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Spain, especially when you think of Southern Spain.  However, Spain has fabulous skiing across the country including southern Spain.  Traveling to Spain in the winter has its major advantages.  For the major cities this is their down season which makes the hotels very affordable.  Hate waiting in lines to see the sights, not a problem in the winter.  Does your significant other not care for all the culture Spain has to offer but loves to ski?  What better way for both of you to get what you want by combining a ski vacation in with some sightseeing.

For this page I am going to stick with skiing from Madrid and South although there are a lot more ski resorts in other parts of the country.

Puerto de Navacerrada Ski Resort

Puerto de Navacerrada, just outside of Madrid is Puerto de Navacerrada with only a 45 minute drive from the capital and even shorter drive from Segovia this ski resort is most definitely the playground to the citizens of Madrid.

With an altitude above 5000 feet snow cover is fairly reliable here.  It does help that they have over 50 snow making machines should Mother Nature not fully cooperate.  With sixteen runs, 8 lifts and trails for every level skier this mountain offers just enough to keep the whole family happy.

Valdesquí Resort

Valdesquie, the second closest ski resort to Madrid with about a one hour travel time to the resort is the best ski area for beginners.  Situated in a bowl this ski resort has 29 different runs and 16 different ski lifts.  Don’t worry about packing all your ski equipment and clothing because you can rent it all there.

The Pradollano Ski Resort

The Sierra Nevada Mountains offers skiing in the southernmost part of Europe.  Located less than an hour from Granada the Pradollano ski resort or Sierre Nevada Ski resort as most people call it is the southernmost ski resort in Spain.  It is also one of the highest ski resorts in Spain making it one of the better as far a snow conditions.  To help ensure snow conditions they employ over 300 snow canons across the mountain.  The Sierra Nevada has a total of 118 runs that guarantee fun all day long.   The mountain mainly caters to locals so a ski day in the middle of the week could mean empty trails and no ski lines, a skiers dream.
